I’ve spent three decades wandering around inside the heart and soul of a dog, writing Benji stories, directing Benji movies, trying to understand how to better draw you, the audience, in there with me. This time and effort spent on four legs learning to inhale the world from a canine point of view has taught me many amazingly simple lessons about life. Lessons that can and should apply to our lives, yours and mine, because they work better.
Dogs know more than we do.
By knowing less.
They realize that one’s soul prospers from sharing, caring, relating, fulfilling. And they know there is nothing more important in life than love. Not money. Not status. Not peer pressure.
Nothing can make you feel better than doing something good for somebody else. Putting another being before yourself. Not cars. Not houses. Not facelifts. Not watching television.
John Grogan, author of Marley & Me, says, “People can learn a lot from their dogs. Lessons on how to lead happier, more fulfilling lives. Lessons for successful relationships. Think about it. Many of the qualities that come so effortlessly to dogs — loyalty, devotion, selflessness, unflagging optimism, unqualified love — can be elusive to humans.”
But not any more. Now humans can read Dog On It and change their lives for the better. Forever. Because their reminder is ever present, lying at your feet.
If you don’t have a dog, or two, or three, there’s no way for you to understand this concept, much less embrace it. So put this book down and go straightaway to your local animal shelter. Don’t open the cover until you have a warm puppy or a big old lab sprawled in your lap.
For the rest of us, those who have dogs, squeeze in closer for a moment and ponder this quiz. Have you ever told a little white lie? Or maybe a bigger one that wasn’t even white? Have you ever stomped through the front door all grumpy and barking at your kids, or your spouse? Have you ever questioned the value of being persistent, not giving up? Or being loyal? Or having passion? Have you ever had to work at making someone else happy? Have you ever shaded the truth in a business deal? Or pondered the meaning of the word selfish?
Your dog hasn’t. None of the above.
And we can all learn from that.
And that’s what this book is about.

The story of our journey with horses (to date) is told in the two books that follow: the national best seller The Soul of a Horse – Life Lessons from the Herd and its sequel Born Wild – The Soul of a Horse.
And what a story it is as two novices without a clue stumble and bumble their way through the learning process so that hopefully you won’t have to. If you haven’t read both of these books already please do because with that reading, I believe, will come not just the knowledge of discovery but the passion and the excitement to cause you to commit to your journey with horses, to do for the horse without waiver so that your relationship and experience will be with loving, happy and healthy horses who are willing partners and who never stop trying for you. Horses like ours.
