Birthplace of The Soul of a Horse
Valley Center, California. Where it all started now almost seven years ago. Before we had a horse or a clue. All caused by the three half-open stalls and a hay shed that came with this, our first ever home in the country. Stalls that we couldn’t leave empty, that is until we learned that stalls were supposed to be empty :). The combination arena and round pen was the most expensive part of the decision to get horses. The tack room and “covered bridge” we built ourselves. For southern California the views here were spectacular and it all served our beginnings very well. But I wouldn’t trade it for the Tennessee digs where we now reside. With a big 100-year-old barn, but nary a stall on the place.

We had fun building it all ourselves. Well… I suppose “fun” is a relative term :). This might be the only structure in the county without a single square corner or proper angle.
No plastic hangers here. Everything was hung on one of these or old rustic metal coat hooks. It was what I called “what next?” construction :) but looked cool and saved a ton.
The entire story of our journey with horses (at least through early 2014) is told in the two books that follow: the national best seller The Soul of a Horse – Life Lessons from the Herd and its sequel Born Wild – The Soul of a Horse.
And what a story it is as two novices without a clue stumble and bumble their way through the learning process so that hopefully you won’t have to. If you haven’t read both of these books already please do because with that reading, I believe, will come not just the knowledge of discovery but the passion and the excitement to cause you to commit to your journey with horses, to do for the horse without waiver so that your relationship and experience will be with loving, happy and healthy horses who are willing partners and who never stop trying for you.
