First Time, First Human Ever on This Mustang’s Back
Totally a Non-Event
Note above that she is spreading her right front to help balance and support my weight. That movement away from the mounting block caused me to lose my own balance and throw more weight against her.
She leans right to fully balance my weight. I look like I’m barely hanging on but I don’t remember the moment as anything scary.
Now she shifts back to her left to catch the sagging Joe :)
Ahhh….
I’m okay. Are you okay? :).
Her first time ever with a human on her back and all she was worried about was not dropping me off. Just amazing. So trusting and so willing.
What a good girl.
Say cheese.

The story of our journey with horses (to date) is told in these two books (following): the national best seller The Soul of a Horse – Life Lessons from the Herd and its sequel Born Wild – The Soul of a Horse.
And what a story it is as two novices without a clue stumble and bumble their way through the learning process so that hopefully you won’t have to. If you haven’t read both of these books already please do because with that reading, I believe, will come not just the knowledge of discovery but the passion and the excitement to cause you to commit to your journey with horses, to do for the horse without waiver so that your relationship and experience will be with loving, happy and healthy horses who are willing partners and who never stop trying for you. Horses like ours.

Joe & Kathleen,
You are amazing! and Thank you!
A thing of pure beauty to be sure. I don’t have horses anymore but I am raising an Australian Shepard. All the same principals apply. The big difference, Molly Montana never suffered at the hands of man.
You, sir, are a true inspiration.
This is awesome Joe! I just got done reading your latest book and it was wonderful. If only people would realize how their relationship is the very first thing to start a beautiful journey. It is a wonder that she trust a human again after she had gone thru. I wish I could win the lottery then I would save all the wild horses. I hope some day I can go see them in my lifetime, if there are any left, breaks my heart. I love reading about you, Kathleen and your horses updates. God bless you all.
Amazing! Truly inspiring to see! What a beautiful horse she is and look how proud and responsible she looks! What a huge moment for you both. Congratulations ..
What would be interesting to know is how you prepared your mind, your breathing, what you were thinking when you put your weight on her back for the first time, and if you had worked towards mounting her in any way during the run up to this very happy day!
Helen… there was very little mental preparation because both Kathleen and I believed this would be a non-event. For the preceding couple of months I had been crawling up onto an upside down water tub while she was eating breakfast and leaning across her to scratch her off side. Maybe three times a week. Slowly adding weight. Letting her feel my full weight maybe once a week by lifting my feet off the tub. She would sometimes turn and look at me with this puzzled look. So when the day came it no one was really worried about it, least of all Saffy. The biggest surprise is how much she worked at keeping herself under me. How she took care of me. Such an awesome girl!!
That’s so interesting to know, Joe, thank you!
I am amazed everyday how much horses who trust us give. How much they TRY. It always feels 1000 times more than a human could ever give in a similar situation. When I first got on Hiro (think Ferrari-like 4-year-old rescue Thoroughbred) he was an ocean of calm, looked at me and said, ‘Oh finally! Come on, off we go ..’
When I dismounted and went to stroke his face his eyes were as soft and gentle as can be. Love and kindness exuded from him. He was just so happy. And I can see a similar look on Saffron’s face. What a clever, beautiful girl she is! Thanks for all you are doing and all we have learned from you, Kathleen and your herd.
Just awesome what trust will do. Keep up the good work!!!
Joe and Kathleen!
WOW! What a day! I just get all bubbly inside just knowing all the hard work and time and LOVE you have put into this horse! And the pictures show the time spent is so well worth it. So excited for the days ahead! May the Lord protect you in the this adventure that is so rewarding!
God bless you both and Ms. Saffron!
Lee
Thanks so much for the kind words everyone!Yes, a very special day… and clear proof of what complete trust can do.
Well, geezer (& Saffron) you did good!
If only the idiot (nicest title I can give) who called wild horses dinks & something else just as mean could see this beautiful trusting WILD HORSE! Of course I guess we cant call her wild anymore.
I’m just as proud of you & Saffron as if I was responsible for this myself.
Maggie
